Over a dozen new infectious disease topics from 2000-2018 help you explore their correlation to COVID and more.

Metopio recently added new topics to our Data Dictionary from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)!

We now have updated and added data including:

  • Chlamydia prevalence CMY
  • Gonorrhea prevalence GRR
  • Syphilis case rate SYP
  • Tuberculosis prevalence TBS
  • HIV prevalence HIV
  • New HIV Diagnoses HID
  • Linkage to HIV care LHV
  • Receipt of HIV care RMC
  • HIV viral suppression HVS
  • HIV knowledge of status HKS
  • Estimated HIV Incidence EHI

Challenges

The medical community is still trying to understand how and why COVID-19 impacts individuals differently. We learn something new every day.

On June 25, 2020, the CDC expanded the list of underlying medical conditions that may increase the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 to include conditions such as obesity OBE, COPD LNG and Chronic Kidney Disease CKD. The CDC estimates that 60 percent of American adults have at least one underlying chronic condition. Obesity is one of the most common underlying conditions with about 40 percent of American adults in that category.

Why does this data matter?

With this new data, you can look closer at places and populations at greater risk. COVID-19 has brought urgent attention to the importance of gathering data on infectious diseases across the country. Due to the serious and sometimes deadly nature of these diseases, it is key to track disease status, risk factors, occurrence, demographics, and availability of care in order to understand them in context.

Analyzing the data allows us to understand how these diseases affect millions of individuals and widen health disparities among communities. The valuable insights can also be the basis for creating effective interventions for infectious diseases like HIV, STDs, and TB.

Insight

As research continues to develop on infectious diseases, understanding how social or health conditions relate to one another is critical. In this example, Metopio’s scatterplot can compare Linkage to HIV care LHV and HIV Viral Suppression HVS to demonstrate a significant correlation where there is an increase in care there is also an increase in suppression.

Access to care is a perpetual hurdle to those struggling with chronic and, as we can see, infectious diseases. Identifying these challenges and providing appropriate medical care could ultimately reduce the risk of transmission and complications from the illness.

The new and updated CDC Infectious Disease topics in Metopio can provide valuable insights for vulnerable populations. The power of curated data is how fast and easy you are able to compare diverse topics and generate new insights.
